Derco Aerospace has won a $50 million contract against stiff competition from Lockheed Martin and Raytheon to upgrade the C-130 Hercules.

The award is a subcontract of the $1.4 billion System for the Vigilance of the Amazon (SIVAM) programme developed by the Brazilian government to help ensure sustainable development of the Amazon region.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based Derco will manage and perform scheduled maintenance, supply spares, carry out in-depth modifications and provide support training for Brazilian SIVAM personnel.

The contract calls for programmed depot maintenance, airframe structural upgrades and improved standard outerwings.

Improved bleed air distribution ducts will also be introduced and the Allison T56-A7 engines will be modified to an -A15 configuration. The avionics and environmental control systems of the aircraft will also be upgraded.

Max Dermond, president of Derco Aerospace, says: "Derco has diversified and expanded from a logistical parts company to a market leader providing programme management, systems integration and logistical support to air forces and maintenance facilities worldwide."
