The airline, British Airways' German subsidiary, says that the contract is worth $287 million, and that deliveries of the 136-seat aircraft will start in August.

Deutsche BA's present 737-300 fleet, which consists of nine leased aircraft, will be boosted to up to 18 737s by the end of this year. The order comes as part of its strategy to cut costs by focusing on a single-type fleet operating primarily on internal German routes.

The airline, which has been in the red since its launch in 1992, is hoping to become profitable within 18 months.
