German air traffic service provider DFS will on 6 June switch on the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) satellite navigation system augmentation signal for the first time. EGNOS will use three existing satellites and a network of ground stations that receive signals, assess and correct them, and uplink the corrected signals for rebroadcast by the satellites to users. This European Space Agency project is seen as a forerunner to the planned Galileo global navigation satellite system.
