The US Air Force and Boeing have flight tested the Alenia Marconi Systems Diamondback extendible wing on two demonstration Small Smart Bombs (SSBs). The 115kg (250lb) bombs were launched from a Lockheed Martin F-16 and were designed to validate the concept of a small winged munition. Technology from the SSB and larger GBU-31/32 Joint Direct Attack Munition is intended to be fed into the new Small Diameter Bomb programme, for which Boeing is competing against Lockheed Martin.
