Universal Avionics has received US approval for its Vision-1 “synthetic vision” displays for the first time in a Part 25 transport-category aircraft. Supplemental type certification (STC) was received following flight tests in Universal’s Bombardier Challenger 601-3A business jet. The company already has an STC in Part 23 aircraft. The Vision-1 system works with Universal’s retrofit primary flight and navigation displays (PFD and ND) and computer-generates two different three-dimensional renderings of the terrain ahead in real time. Egocentric view (left) replaces the blue/brown background on the PFD with heading-, pitch- and roll-oriented colour imagery. Exocentric view, on the ND, displays the aircraft, flightplan and terrain from a “wingman” viewpoint above and behind the aircraft.
