UK precision components specialist Doncasters Group has joined an alliance with Hamilton Sundstrand to manufacture turbo machinery for the US company's Boeing 787 APS5000 auxiliary power unit (APU). It is the most lucrative contract in Doncasters' 226-year history and could be worth more than $300 million over the life of the programme.

Doncasters will manufacture the entire turbine section for the unit, including all structural components as well as many of the main components for the compressor. The company will co-locate a team at Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems' base in San Diego, California, to support the work.

Doncasters has also increased its stake in the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 powering the Boeing 787 Dreamliner with a deal to manufacture ring rolled forgings for the engine. The components will be made from a complex, nickel-based alloy at the UK company's Blaenavon factory and will be used in the Trent 1000 high-pressure/intermediate-pressure case.
