Sir - James Weber reacts to the article "Crash cause may never be known" about the ATR accident (Flight International, Letters, 8-14 February, P41) by stating that "...the French attitude appears to be to let the aircraft continue to crash while it works out what is happening".

He also says: "The FAA [US Federal Aviation Administration] would prohibit operation in conditions which seem to cause problems."

If this is so, how could the FAA permit Boeing 737s to be flown after the Pittsburgh accident? The chairman of the US National Transportation Safety Board declared that it was "...not able to determine what happened to the aircraft because of 'inadequate flight-data recorders'."

Maybe Mr Weber thinks that this was not a problem?
