British Aerospace has contracted Dowty Aerospace to design and develop a suite of flight-control actuation equipment for installation on BAe's Integrated Flight and Propulsion Control System technology demonstration rig.

The rig, located at BAe Military Aircraft Division at Warton in the UK, will be used to perform integration testing of flight-and engine-controls, avionics, navigation systems and software now under development for next- generation military aircraft.

Dowty says that its contract covers the supply of primary flight-control actuators and "a new concept for a wing leading-edge actuation system". The latter is a fully active, hydraulic system which uses direct-drive valves, says Paul Strothers, managing director of Dowty's Aerospace Products division. Dowty will also have access to the completed BAe test rig for future research and development projects.
