G & C International, Robinson’s distributor in the GCC area, says that it expects to start selling the new Robinson R66 “from 2010”. The R66 is Robinson’s first turbine-powered helicopter, a derivative of the R44 powered by Rolls Royce’s new, 300shp RR300. The new type features an 8in wider cabin allowing five seats, and a baggage compartment is added behind the rear seats, below the engine. It retains the R44’s rotor system, though the pylon is raised by between 8in and 12in. The prototype has not yet flown, but is substantially complete, and certification of the engine is expected in 2008.
