Long before the first visitors stride through the gates at Dubai '97 and before the deafening roar of engines fills the air for the first full flying display, the showground has been alive with sounds of a different kind.

Final preparations have been underway all week to welcome the thousands expected from the aviation business from every corner of the globe.

The halls echoed with the sounds of determined hammering and the smell of fresh paint was everywhere as representatives from countries as far apart as the United States and Australia put the finishing touches to their stands.

Almost as soon as the industry began to pack up its collective suitcases after the Paris Airshow back in June, detailed preparations for the Middle East showcase were beginning in earnest.

Now it's Dubai's turn to bask in the international spotlight as the show marks its fifth staging with what promises to be the biggest and best gathering to date.
