NASA's Stardust space explorer, en route towards its rendezvous with the comet Wild 2 in January 2002, has completed the first phase of its interstellar dust collection. A similar "aerogel collector" will be used to collect cometary dust in mid-2002. The spacecraft will return a capsule containing the dust particles to Earth in 2006.
