UK-based E2V Technologies is offering a hand-held thermal imaging camera that aims to help aircrew locate fires.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada's recently published report on the Swissair 111 Boeing MD-11 disaster highlighted the importance of knowing the precise location of a fire. The crew's inability to direct cabin fire extinguishant accurately was a factor in the September 1998 crash in which 215 passengers and 14 crew died.

The 2kg (4.4lb) camera has a liquid-crystal display, for fast visual identification, and an internal power source.
