Unmanned air vehicle technologies for anti-terrorist surveillance missions are to be assessed under a €15 million ($18 million) European Union Sixth Framework programme project.

The project is called Preparatory Action for Security Research and will fund eight technology projects and five supporting activities. The UAV research is one of those supporting activities.

Dassault Aviation has been selected to lead a 10-partner UAV consortium from eight countries. The company’s final task will be a live demonstration mission, but Dassault has not yet chosen the UAV-type vehicle to be used.

“We’re looking at all the options,” the company says.

The €15 million project will also fund research into the protection of airliners against man-portable air-defence systems and security information networks, airports and terrorism prevention exercises.
