Flight International online news 10:00GMT: The European Commission has added Ukraine to the list of countries it is seeking negotiations with on establishing a common aviation area.

It marks a further sign of the EC’s determination to rapidly pursue open aviation agreements with non-European Union (EU) states – having already this month formally proposed it begin aviation talks with Australia, Chile, India and New Zealand.

The EC says Ukraine is considered a priority country in its European Neighbourhood Policy and an action plan was agreed earlier this year to support Ukraine’s objective of further integrating into the European economic structures.

Earlier this summer, Ukraine and the EC agreed a so-called “horizontal agreement”, part of EC efforts to bring member states’ existing bilateral aviation agreements into line with new European law on nationality clauses, and reached agreement on Ukraine’s participation in Europe’s satellite radio navigation programme Galileo.
