Eclipse Aviation has won US Federal Aviation Administration approval for friction-stir welding used in assembling the Eclipse 500 personal jet. The company is the first to use the process on thin-gauge aircraft aluminium. The technique will replace over 60% of rivets in assemblies including cabin, aft fuselage, wing and engine mounts.
