Swiss charter operator Edelweiss Air has ordered three new Airbus A320s to replace its Boeing MD-80 fleet.

The Zurich-based carrier, which operates three 162-seat MD-83s, two on operating lease from GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) and the third on financial lease from Credit Agricole, will take delivery of the first two 172-seat A320s in early 1999 and the third at the end of the year. The two MD-83s leased from GECAS are approaching the end of their lease terms. The airline is in discussions to sell the third MD-83.

Edelweiss, a 100% subsidiary of Kuoni Travel, has been flying its current fleet since April 1996. Engine selection for the A320s is expected later this month.
