The forerunner for Europe's Galileo navigation satellite system is set to go live this week, with the opening of a master control centre in Rome. The Italian air navigation services agency at Ciampino will oversee almost 40 ground stations and three satellites for the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS), which is due to be completed by the end of the year. EGNOS will provide a position accurate to within 2m (6.5ft) for users in Europe and beyond, using the US global positioning system which provides a basic accuracy of around 20m.
