Elbit Systems is seeking a deal with Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) to kick-start an upgrade programme for the Thai air force's Northrop F-5s which has been hit by budget cuts.

Talks between the Israeli companies are expected soon in an effort to assemble a finance package.

Elbit had earlier won the competition to upgrade 30 Thai F-5s. The $60 million contract was agreed in principle, but the Thais have delayed finalising it because of budget problems.

The upgrade will provide new avionics, including multifunction displays, a head-up display, an advanced mission computer and the Rafael Python 4 short-range air-to-air missile. A similar package was the basis for upgrading the Singapore air force's F-5s.
