Elisra has unveiled its Sapir panoramic night-vision system for pilots.

The system provides a 360º view from the cockpit, using the sensors of an existing passive missile approach warning system (PAWS).

Elisra's PAWS, which is installed on both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, uses advanced infrared (IR) sensors to detect a missile's exhaust plume, even in highly cluttered and dynamic environments.

Sapira makes use of the four IR sensors that together cover a 360º field-of-view to provide a panoramic night vision capability. The Israeli company says the system solves the problem of the limited field-of-view provided by normal night-vision goggles.

Elisra adds that IR sensors used by the missile warning system also allow the pilot to look in the direction of the sun. The pilot sees the 360º image through a special display that is attached to his basic helmet. The dual-use system also uses parallel processing.
