Israel's two domestic and regional carriers, Arkia and Israir, have been briefed by Embraer on its 175 and 190 regional jet types as possible replacements for their ATR 42/72 and Bombardier Dash 8 fleets.
Both companies want to improve their domestic routes efficiency and extend their capabilities in the growing market for flights to regional holiday sites in Cyprus, Greece and Turkey.
Sources inside the two airlines said that other options are also being evaluated, with an eye on market trends.
El Al passengers travelling from Rome Leonardo da Vinci's new Terminal 5 are being subject to fresh security measures that are tighter than those employed elsewhere in the airport. After security checks, passengers are transported by bus to the duty free area at the main terminal, and from there proceed to the gates.
Terminal 5, which was built in just six months for $20 million, is designed to handle about 1 million passengers yearly its enhanced security regime will also process passengers bound for the USA with American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta, United and US Airways.
