Escaping from a helicopter in an emergency, when the aircraft cabin may be filled with smoke or water, depends on clearly-visible markings on all exits as demanded by civil aviation authority regulations.

Norwegian-based Helikopter Service is promoting its latest product to enhance safety in rotary wing aircraft with its helicopter emergency egress lighting (HEEL) system

The HEEL is an exit-marking system using fibreglass encapsulated electrolumin-escent lamps, similar in construction to the Formation Lights in some 8,000 military fighter aircraft and Floor Proximity Emergency Escape Lighting installed in more than 6,000 civil airliners.

Power is supplied by a watertight version of the rechargeable battery pack used for fixed wing applic-ations.
