Emirates' chairman Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum yesterday signed a letter of intent (LoI) with Boeing for six more 777s to add to its fleet.

The order, worth some $1.3 billion, is equivalent in value to the letter of interest that Emirates has signed with Airbus for A3XXs, Sheikh Ahmed said. He emphasised to Boeing Commercial Airline president Alan Mulally that this is part of Emirates' continuing strategy to operate a balanced fleet from both manufacturers.

When added to the airline's other 777s in service and on order, Emirates will operate 19 777s - one of the largest fleets of the type in the industry. Emirates has nine 777-200s and is scheduled to take delivery of another four -300s by the end of 2003.
