Austrian engine maker and Bombardier Recreational Products affiliate BRP-Rotax has shelved its V6 piston engine programme, saying it no longer fits with the company's core business of supplying engines to power recreational products. Its range includes the 912 and 914 Rotax powerplants.

"The V6 was launched when we were owned by Bombardier, which had a strong focus on aviation products," says Gerd Ohrnberger, BRP-Rotax vice-president and general manager.

The privately owned company, in which the Bombardier family holds a 35% stake, says it will complete certification of the 300hp (225kW) engine by the end of the year. However, Ohrnberger says BRP is unlikely to sell the engine design "due to product liability laws, particularly in the USA".
