NASA has formed an inquiry board to investigate a fire on the A-1 developmental Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) test-stand during a firing which took place at the Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, on 27 August. A non-flight SSME was being fired for 710s to test new engine-components at 109% rated thrust when the turbine-discharge temperature exceeded its limits. The fire occurred as the test was stopped automatically at T+568s.
