CFM has launched a new technology programme, called LEAP56 (Leading Edge Aviation Propulsion), to position the CFM56 engine family for future narrowbody aircraft. Engine makers will be “salivating” over the order prospects for the eventual successors to the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737, says Boeing chief Alan Mulally. However, the industry needs a “few years before we see the next improvement in engine technology” that will render current airframes obsolete.
