Lycoming has recalled 900 piston engines to replace potentially faulty crankshafts, grounding 800 aircraft worldwide. The recall affects TIO-540 and LTIO-540 engines rated at 225kW (300hp) or higher. The US Federal Aviation Administration has issued an emergency airworthiness directive (AD) prompted by the investigation of the 4 August fatal crash of a TIO-540-powered Piper Malibu Mirage in Michigan and citing reports of 17 crankshaft failures. The AD requires replacement before further flight.
