British Airways and Iberia parent IAG has tentatively selected the Pratt & Whitney PW1100G powerplant for 47 of the Airbus A320neos the company has ordered.
The agreement covers a portion of the huge order for the re-engined jets – covering up to 220 aircraft – unveiled by IAG in 2013.
Pratt & Whitney has confirmed, during the Paris air show, that it has signed a memorandum of understanding for the PW1100G on 47 aircraft.
IAG has not indicated how these P&W-powered jets will be distributed within its airline operations, although its Spanish budget operation Vueling currently has 47 A320neos on firm order with Airbus.
Nor has it stated whether it intends to split the powerplant order with rival CFM International which supplies the Leap-1A.
IAG had postponed a decision on the engine selection following the emergence of technical snags with the PW1100G's development.
P&W says it "appreciates IAG's faith" in the powerplant shown by the preliminary agreement.
British Airways has 25 A320neos and 10 A321neos on order, according to Airbus backlog data, while Iberia has 17 A320neos and three A321neos.
IAG's Irish carrier Aer Lingus is also intending to acquire A321neos – the longer-range A321LR version – but these will be taken from US lessor Air Lease.
