Rolls-Royce has secured full flight certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency for the Trent 1000-TEN, an upgrade of the Boeing 787 engine which can power all three variants of the widebody.
"This important milestone comes as the first set of passenger engines are delivered to the Boeing facilities in Seattle, ready for entry into service later this year," says the UK engine maker, which notes that the Trent 1000-TEN incorporates technologies from the Trent XWB and Advance engine programmes.
In a graduation exercise earlier this month, the upgraded engine powered an 18h test flight adhering to a flightpath that traced the outline of a 787-8 across the USA.
Dave Taylor, Rolls-Royce's chief engineer for the Trent 1000, states that the EASA certification "marks another critical step in our journey towards delivering additional capability and new technology for the Boeing 787".
He adds that the manufacturer is expecting the engine to enter service later this year.
