Eurocontrol wants improvements in the incident reporting culture in some member states, insisting action is needed to ensure air traffic management safety levels are preserved. It says “there is a clear deficiency with regard to the availability and quality of data”.

Meanwhile, Europe is heading for its busiest year in air transport, with the number of flights a day exceeding 30,000 and growth of almost 8% in traffic processed by the Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre.

Eurocontrol director general Victor Aguardo says Europe is seeing the largest percentage growth in numbers of flights as well as the largest absolute number of flights ever. “At any one time there are 2,600 aircraft in the sky, 15% more than in 2000,” he says. The growth stems principally from the opening of aviation markets in the 10 new European Union member states.
