Eurocontrol has launched a service to warn European states if they are listed as the origin or destination of an operator considered to pose a potential safety risk.
The scheme, unveiled last year, has been devised to improve the information flow between safety authorities as part of a pan-European effort to increase scrutiny of carriers suspected of poor safety oversight.
Eurocontrol implemented the warning system at its Central Flow Management Unit last week, and will issue an alert if a carrier or aircraft listed as posing a safety risk plans to enter European airspace.
This will enable national authorities to impose restrictions if necessary or inspect or ground the aircraft after it arrives.
n European Commission regulators have adopted new rules on airspace classification as part of the Single European Sky project.
The airspace classification regulation creates a common classification for airspace above flight level 195 (195,000ft).
The EC says the regulation will “create a transparent framework” for flights operating over European borders and allows access for aircraft operating under visual flight rules.
