Production of the radar for the Eurofighter combat aircraft has begun after the partners in the programme signed a $640 million contract.

Britain's GEC-Marconi, Germany's Dasa-VE, Italy's FIAR and Spain's ENOSA are to build the radars for the 620 Eurofighters ordered in December 1997.

The four companies are part of the Euroradar consortium which has been working on the project since 1990. Flight testing, including the use of a specially configured BAC-one-eleven aircraft, seen above with one of the two-seater trials aircraft, has been under way since 1996.
