The online travel portal owned by nine European airlines has been given the name Opodo. The name was chosen to fit across different languages and cultures. The service, which has web sites customised for different countries, will launch in Germany by year-end, swiftly followed by France, the UK and Italy in the first half of 2002. Other European countries will be covered by 2003. The venture, which expects to be profitable by 2004 and plans to invest $110 million this year, still awaits regulatory clearance from Brussels.
