German airline Eurowings announced at Le Bourget yesterday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to buy five ATR 42-500s - plus options for a further five aircraft.

Eurowings operates the largest ATR fleet in Europe which comprises 17 ATR 42-300s; six ATR 72-200s; and four ATR 72-210s.

This latest order for the twin-engined commuter gives Eurowings the opportunity to replace some of its older ATR 42-300s.

Improved

Due to its higher cruising speed and improved cabin comfort, the new aircraft will operate on Eurowings' longer routes.

Eurowings also operates six BAe 146-200s and two Airbus A-319s which it uses on behalf of tour operators to holiday destinations in the Mediterranean.

In future, the airline intends to concentrate on its international routes, developing partnerships with KLM and Air France and diversifying into charter operations.
