TAIWAN-BASED carrier EVA Air has confirmed plans to buy six McDonnell Douglas MD-90s with the signing of a letter of intent by airline president, Frank Hsu, at the hand-over ceremony of its sixth MD-11.

The contract, when confirmed will include options, for an additional six aircraft: four to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 1996 and two in the first quarter of 1997. The MD-90 purchase will see EVA taking one of the aircraft and its Taiwan-based associate operator, Makung International taking the other five. EVA holds a 31% stake in Makung.

The EVA selection is another boost for the MD-90, which has seen a recent flurry of orders after several years of drought. Official orders for the twinjet grew to 70 on 14 August when Scandinavian Airline System added another pair to the six it already has on order.
