Czech manufacturer Evektor Aerotechnik has launched its EV-97 SportStar all-metal two-seater in North America, in anticipation of the introduction of the US Federal Aviation Administration's new light sport aircraft category. The company has appointed Davis Aviation in Tennessee as its US distributor for the $70,000-80,000 SportStar.

The light sport aircraft/sport pilot rule, which is awaiting final approval, is intended to reduce the cost and complexity of recreational flying by creating a new category of lightweight factory-produced certificated aircraft. Powered by a 100hp (75kW) Rotax 912, the low-wing, fixed-gear SportStar weighs 510kg (1,125lb) and has a 115kt (212km/h) maximum speed.
