Former BMI chief executive Wolfgang Prock-Schauer has been recruited by Germany's Air Berlin to head strategy and network planning for the carrier.
Prock-Schauer will take on the role from 1 October, a post which gives him responsibility for alliances and revenue management at the Oneworld airline.
Air Berlin has disclosed the decision as it restructures its board, reducing it from 15 members to 10.
Among the five stepping down from the board - although not from their posts - are chief financial officer Ulf Huttmeyer, chief commercial officer Paul Gregorowitsch and chief operating officer Helmut Himmelreich.
Air Berlin chief executive Hartmut Mehdorn retains his board seat. The airline is undergoing a restructuring programme but board chairman Hans-Joachim Korber says there is "still a great deal more to be achieved to meet our strategic commercial objectives".
