New chairman arrives at China Southern

A vice-minister of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has taken over as chairman of China Southern Airlines. Liu Shaoyong has taken over from 61-year old Yan Zhi Quing, who has also resigned as a director, "for age reasons" according to a statement from the Guangzhou-based carrier. Liu's appointment was expected as state-run media reported in August that top-level changes were coming at Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern in line with government efforts to bring younger blood into their operations. Liu, a CAAC vice-minister, was identified as the likely successor to retiring Yan. Liu previously held senior management positions with Chinese airlines, including that of president of China Eastern between 2000 and 2002.
