National aviation security experts met in Brussels last week and backed European Commission proposals that would harmonise airport security procedures throughout the European Union. The new rules, which update 2002 aviation legislation, propose that passengers:

■ be limited to carrying on board liquid in four or five up to 100ml containers, in a plastic bag to be presented at security checkpoints;

■ carry hand luggage not exceeding 56 x 45 x 25cm (22 x 18 x 10in), with the possibility of some exemptions such as for musical instruments;

■ remove coats and jackets at checkpoints;

■ remove laptops and large electrical items from bags for security checks.

The new regulations are likely to be backed by European commissioners when they meet this week, and could become law by early November.
