Explorer Aircraft, the Colorado-based developer of a new single-engined family of utility transport aircraft, will complete its start-up business plan by September. This could include setting up a production site in Canada.

The Explorer is a high-wing single, aimed to fill the niche between piston singles and larger turboprops, such as the Cessna Caravan. It will be offered initially in two versions - the 10 seat -500 and the 16 seat -750. Designed originally in Perth by Aeronautical Engineers Australia, the programme was moved to Denver, USA, about six months ago, says chief executive Graham Swannell.

Explorer is considering production sites throughout the USA and Canada, but the final location could be influenced by the engine suppliers, both of which are based in Canada, says the company.

The Explorer 500R will be offered with the V-8 600 hp reciprocating OE600 made by Ontario-based Orenda, while the 500T and 750T will be available with versions of Montreal-based Pratt & Whitney Canada's PT6A turboprop.

Explorer says investment funding is almost complete, and the certification effort will start in January.

All derivatives will be based on the 350R proof-of-concept version of the aircraft which first flew in January 1998.
