AgustaWestland is to increase the maximum gross weight (MGW) of the AW139 in a bid to capture a greater share of the long range offshore transport market, a sector currently being served by larger 18/19-seat types.

The manufacturer plans to certify the AW139 with an MGW of 6,800kg (14,991lb), a 400kg (882lb) increase on the current certified MGW for the type.
AgustaWestland says the improvements will give operators increased productivity and will be available as an option on all new production aircraft. The AW139 in typical offshore configuration for 12 passengers and 30 minutes fuel reserve will have a range of 300nm (555km), while for long range operations the AW139 will be able to fly more than 500nm with six passengers, putting it in the same league as larger 10-ton class aircraft.

EASA certification of the MGW increase is expected by the end of 2008 with FAA certification following soon afterwards.
The company is also developing a FIPS (Full Ice Protection System) which will clear the aircraft to operate in icing conditions as defined by EASA/FAR Part 29.
