Lois Wexler, Mayor of Broward County, Florida, is a woman on a mission –- an economic mission for the county that includes driving development of the Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport. Mayor Wexler is visiting Farnborough for this reason, meeting with aerospace players such as Embraer and Zoom Airlines.
“Currently many travelers from the UK must go through Miami International Airport to visit Broward County,” Wexler says. “The industry is under the impression that our gates are full, but this is not true. We are managing our gates differently now to get better utilisation. Delays are down.”
In addition, the airport’s new runway plan recently gained FAA approval and will begin construction in 6-8 months. One of Wexler’s objectives is to encourage airlines serving select European cities to fly directly into Fort Lauderdale, to increase airport traffic and county tourism.
