Cobham has come up with a new means of finding, defusing and recovering suspected unexploded bombs without risking human life.
The UK-based engineering firm has designed and developed a remote-controlled agile robot that can carry out delicate, precision tasks in confined spaces that are difficult to access, like on board aircraft, cars or buses.
The company's Telemax robot is the agile version of a battlefield explosive ordnance disposal device. It can climb steep stairs and enter vehicles like buses and aircraft, or buildings.
Once inside it can open lockers or containers - using a key if necessary - and access zipped or locked bags, then carry out a fine inspection of the ordnance using its embedded precision video camera, before dismantling the bomb to render it harmless.
