Embraer has debuted its re-engined E2 cabin mock-up at the Farnborough air show, boasting a sleeker and more modern interior over the incumbent E-Jet.
The airframer is showing off the mock-up to existing and potential customers as it enters the critical design review process for the E2, which Embraer hopes to complete by end-2014.
“The first iron bird will be ready next year,” says Embraer senior vice president, operations and chief operating officer commercial aviation Luis Carlos Affonso. Embraer aims for first metal cut in the second half of this year, he adds.
The E2 will feature 40% more space in the overhead cabins - allowing each passenger on board to bring a carry-on roller bag - as well as individual control units over each seat for reading lights and air-conditioning vents. Larger windows and mood lighting will also be standard features on the E2.
“The E1 is the benchmark of cabin space and comfort,” says Affonso. “We wanted to take the leadership and refresh the interior.”
Embraer is showcasing a staggered seating business class section on the mock-up, which offers at least a 50in seat pitch. Depending on customers’ preferences, economy class seat pitches can range from 29in to 31in. Embraer says the standard 18.3in seat width in economy class is “among the widest offered in the industry”. The airframer is also rolling out updated touches on the economy class seats, such as a “tablet holder” which passengers can use to hold their iPad or iPhone in the absence of a seatback in-flight entertainment system.
