Thales has added an additional maritime moving target indication (MMTI) mode to its I-Master radar that allows operators to detect and track at-sea targets.

The software upgrade will add to the ground moving target indication and synthetic aperture radar modes that are already integrated into the radar, opening up the utilisation of the system over water.

“The choice of modes in a single sensor, together with its small form factor and high- performance capability, makes I-Master ideally suited for a wide range of manned and unmanned platforms,” the company says.

The radar will now be able to detect small and fast-moving craft as well as larger ships and tankers in all weather conditions, day and night.

Algorithms will allow users to perform a range of tasks including the detection of unusual vessel movements, performing pattern of life analysis, and conducting persistent tracking of targeted vessels.

I-Master is a 30kg 360º radar installed in a 15in electro-optical turret mounting point, and can be used on manned and unmanned fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft.
