As Airline Business was going to press, the 3,500 members of the FedEx Pilots Association (FPA) were poised to implement a policy of no voluntary overtime. The union insists that its only option may be to strike.

A ballot authorising the FPA's board of directors to strike will be counted on 3 December. The pilots say that they are seeking a "fair contract" which gives them parity with the rest of the airline industry.

"We have never left the negotiating table," says the FPA. "They [company management] have left it several times."

FedEx says its proposal is "very strong", but seems uncertain about the next move. It has warned the FPA that time is running out to reassure customers that it will provide a service over the Christmas period.
