Liberty Aerospace flew its two-seat XL-2 for the first time on 3 April from its Montrose, Colorado base. US certification of the all-composite piston single is scheduled for the fourth quarter of the year, with deliveries beginning in early 2002. Produced by STW Composites, the 75kW (100hp) Rotax 912S-powered XL-2 offers a 120kt (220km/h) cruise speed and a 925km (500nm) range.

The XL-2 will make its debut at Sun 'n' Fun in Florida this week. The first 50 aircraft are priced at $85,000, increasing to $97,000 thereafter.
