EGPWS includes a built-in terrain database designed to help eliminate Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFIT). The terrain information display is similar to that used for weather radar. Frank Daly, Honeywell's president, Commercial Aviation Electronic Systems, says: "The flight test programme will validate our radio altimeter-based modes and the look-ahead algorithms, including a higher resolution terrain database for both on and off-airport/helipad operation, tail strike warning and auto-rotation altitude awareness call-outs. This new EGPWS product is a continuation of our commitment to aviation safety that began more than 50 years ago."

Sikorsky is to offer the EGPWS on the S76 helicopter after testing and certification, planned for completion in the fourth quarter of this year.

EGPWS meets or exceeds all the requirements of a Class "A" Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS) as defined by the FAA. The new helicopter EGPWS is designed to meet the specific low-level flight requirements of rotary-wing aircraft.
