This is the first direct image of a star other than the Sun, showing the famous red super giant, Betelgeuse, formally known as Alpha Orionis. The image reveals a huge ultra-violet atmosphere - enough to envelope our Solar System as far as the planet Jupiter, with a huge hot spot ten times the diameter of the Earth, at least 2,000K hotter than the surface of the star. The picture of the star, 650 light years away, is the equivalent of resolving a car's headlights at a distance of 9,600km.
