Airliner net orders came in at 31 in August as 46 new orders were offset by 15 cancellations plus two swaps.
Canadian low-cost carrier WestJet Airlines ordered 14 Boeing 737s while Turkish Airlines ordered seven Airbus A330s. Turkmenistan Airlines ordered three 737s to add to their existing fleet which already includes nine aircraft of that type. The major cancellation in August came from Italy's MyWay Airlines with 15 CRJs. Also, Air Berlin swapped an Airbus A320 for an A321 while US Airways swapped an Airbus A319 for an A320.
Boeing was the clear leader in the month with a total of 32 orders and no cancellations. Airbus only received the seven orders from Turkish Airlines while Bombardier totalled six and Embraer one.
The 32 Boeing orders in August were exclusively for 737 narrowbody aircraft while widebody orders were for the seven A330s mentioned previously. Turboprop orders came in with five Bombardier Dash 8s while regional jet orders were for an Embraer ERJ-135 from Bermuda’s Air Mercury and a single CRJ from the UK’s Ocean Sky.
Overall, the order backlog for airliners ended August at 8,006, down 49 on the previous month.
This article was put together by Flightglobal Insight using the ACAS database.
Headline figures for the size and shape of the world airliner fleet through to the start of May 2009 are detailed in the Commercial Fleet Report 2009, while a directory of financing deals struck on new aircraft over the last year is also available within the companion Aircraft Finance Report 2009.
Note: The analysis is on aircraft type basis and not on the end user application. For example, Boeing 737 figures might include BBJs. The Bombardier CRJ types are classified as part of the CRJ regional jet family.
