The decision by IndiGo to order Leap-1As to power 280 Airbus A320neos represents a key win for CFM International over the airline’s incumbent supplier Pratt & Whitney.

Although IndiGo operates 12 CFM56-powered A320ceos, Cirium’s Fleets Analyzer shows that the bulk of its fleet is equipped by International Aero Engines (IAE) and P&W engines. IndiGo operates 116 IAE V2500-powered A320ceos, while its current fleet of 87 A320neo aircraft is powered by the P&W PW1100G.

Fleets Analyzer shows that IndiGo has 343 A320neo family aircraft on backlog, of which 197 are due to be delivered with PW1100G engines and the remainder were previously undecided. The CFM deal is for engines to power a total of 280 aircraft worth $20 billion.

IndiGo was an early operator of the PW1100G-powered A320neo and has suffered some of the engine’s early reliability issues. It has been undertaking a modification programme to address the problems. It grounded one of its aircraft late last year after an inflight low oil pressure warning.

IndiGo is due to receive its first Leap-1A powered A320neo in 2020. The CFM deal includes spare engines and a long-term overhaul support agreement.
